hello all:

i have a sony spressa 4x4x6 drive and wanted to take advantage of the some what better options available for creating CDs with toast over the supplied discribe software. installed toast and everytime i start it up, there is no recorder found. of course, all of the discribe extensions are gone and i'm using only toast extensions including the USB->IDE bridge extensions. no dice at all on finding a recorder.

anyone had any success with this setup? i've got the spressa direct connected (no hub) to my blue G3/400 w/256MB RAM.

thanks,
scott

Scott,
You didn't mention which version of Toast you are using. Do a such of the Forums here, and you will find what others have suggested.(I posted the same question a couple of weeks ago.)
Toast 4.0.2 seems to fully support the Sony Spressa.

4.0.2 ? ? ? I looked for this update and could not find it.

This Sony CD burner is a royal piece of crap! ! !

I have worked on CD Rom projects for the past 4 years and this is by far the worst CD burner I have ever used!

It is so damn picky that I have the only 1 machine in the office that will use it successfully. I have a G4 400 non AGP machine with OS 8.6. I have to use the Discribe (they suck too!) program to set up and burn a CD. I can then make as many of that CD as I want, but if I want to set up a new project without saving the old one, then Discribe will crash. Nice! ! ! !

Discribe v 2.57 is the version I am using and I had to prove that I bought the CD burner by fax just to get the upgrade as the burner shipped with an old version.

Good luck getting Discribe to work on OS 9. We have five machines in our office with OS 9, and not a one of them is able to burn a CD using either Discribe or Toast.

I won't be buying any more Sony things for some time. . .

You sound like you have a lot more experience than me in this field Sprague.
I've only owned this machine for a month..but I haven't had any probs w/it or Discribe so far. (iMac Rev b, OS 8.6, 160 RAM) The version of of Discribe that shipped with my machine is 2.7. Perhaps that fixed a lot of the problems you've had. (OS 9 complience ect.) I'm guessing you've already poured over the "read-me's" and been to Charismac's web page for trouble shouting stuff.
A friend got me the Toast update after I was grumbling to her about my lack of success w/4.0. I didn't relize it wasn't availble from Adaptec's site until I read your post. I'll ask her where it came from. It seems like a software issue, not a hardware problem.

hello all.
I have no problems at all with the Spressa i.link burner (firewire). I use Describe or Toast 4.0. Toast is a little picky about the size of the disk, Describe can do the full 650MB.

Be sure you keep all the Describe extensions as they register the Burner as a SCSI device (if you look in System Profiler), therefore it works under Toast. It won't work on a G4 without the just announced ROM upgrade from Sony (you have to send it in, unfortunately).

Regards,
Oliver

The included software with discribe had a small program called "SONY Hot Plug CD" and that initializes the Sony drive. But keep the Sony USB extensions.
