Ok, I returned my Studio Display because there definitely was wash-out in the upper left corner going on. Even though the guy at Unitek looked at it and didn't see it. The pinstripes in the menu bar were faded out and the menu bar was completely white under the Apple menu. Furthermore, Window title bars exhibited the same look and same with the cocoa tool bars when I put the window in the upper left corner.

They brought another one out and looked at it and it had the same problem. Also their display model had the problem.

Wondering if it was just Unitek having these problems, I drove out to the Apple store to look at there's.

Amazingly their display model didn't have the problem! I convinced them to let me look at one in a box and try it out before I bought it just in case. The one in the box HAD the problem!

AH!

So he offered to give me the display model because he wasn't going to open every box just for me, but the display model had ONE dead pixel and we didn't want to get it because of that.

We drove to Fry's and CompUSA to look at their display models. ALL had the problem

1 out of 6

I didn't see this problem on any of the other monitors like the other Studio displays and the iMacs and the CRT eMacs

Also, the Formac 17.4-inch LCD didn't have the problem

So I've come to the conclusion that something is wrong with the design of the 17-inch Studio displays.

I'm now back on my trusty ViewSonic CRT and waiting until Macworld to see if they come out with new models, because the guy at Fry's didn't have any to sell and said that his computer said they were discontinued by Apple.

Oh yeah, the guy at the Apple store did see it but he just kept saying "well it won't affect your applications" but I didn't want to pay that much for a flawed monitor if I could help it.

So now I wait, I hope that the Fry's guy was telling the truth and that Apple really plans on releasing new models.

Or else I will just save up for a 22-inch since I didn't see any problems with those ;-)

I have the Apple 17" LCD
I don't seem to have that problem at all. Could you go into slightly more detail about where it is?

Thats a damn shame for a high end monitor like that.

Apple studio displays are some of the best around, being one of the few digital only lcd displays - they are meant to offering the best quality picture available.

I personally have a g4 imac and I am pleased ot say that its 15" lcd is of exceptional quality. I have 1 dead pixel, but I can live with it as its right near the edge.
MacBook Alu, 13", 2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 256MB video
G5 Imac, 17", 1.9Ghz, 1.5GB RAM, 128MB video, built in isight, airport and bluetooth
Indigo iBook, 366mhz; 320MB RAM; CD; FW; Airport

Same with the cocoa toolbars that I moved up to that area, so maybe like an inch from the top, and over until like half way in the screen you could see the pinstripes in the menu bar more clearly. The toolbar was possible to see when you got under about the Edit menu.

It's VERY hard to see, but I've been using this ViewSonic CRT forever so I was used to how it looked, and I noticed something was different hehe.

I'm one of the few that actually likes the pinstripes so I guess it was easy for me to see.

It was the same on the other monitors I saw, but different levels. Some were worse! some were almost ok, but there still was definitely something not right.

I didn't see the problem on the 15-inch monitors, or actually on any other brand/size monitor. Only the 17-inch Apple LCDs.

But there was one that was totally fine, except for the dead pixel, so I decided to wait until after Macworld to see what happens there, or maybe just save up for a 22-inch

hey! Ever heard of Calibrating ???
the standard profile s***s for the 17 inch LCDs .. i also had that thought that pinstripes weren't that visible, but its just the standard profile that doesn't fit the screen. I Have an LCD and i Calibrated it with guidesteps i had on paper. Then your LCD comes to life really....
i can see every pinstripe and I have always loved my display, nothing goes near the brightness, depth of the colors... sometimes i think i get can grap something out of my screen because of its sharpness...
the standard profile has the brightness way to high and the contrast way to low...

seems to be a reoccuring problem with the 17" display.....check out the past few weeks of postings on railheaddesign.com. The guy who runs the site had a similar problem with his, involving I think 3 returns to Apple.
