I need to pick up a printer to do basic black-and-white stuff - correspondence, reports -- and only need good letter quality. Color and photo reproduction are secondary concerns. Of the printers so far that (reportedly) work with OS X, does anyone have a recommendation?
I apologize if this topic exists elsewhere -- a search of the forums didn't yield anything useful to me. Thanks for any suggestions.

I got an HP Deskjet 842c and I've been very happy with it. Works with X, 9.1, and classic. Print quality on black and white text is very nice. It can be had for like 70 dollars after coupon and rebate from Staples.com. Good luck!

I've switched from Epson to Canon and I don't regret it. My Canon S600 is cheaper, faster and above all makes less noise than my previous Epson.
Plus ink is less expensive when you use a Canon, you can change only one color...
The S 600 or S 450 are good options for OS X.

I love my Epson 880. 2880 x 720 resolution is great for text, and when it comes time to add graphics to your work, the color charts will look stunning. Cost was about $120 at CompUSA. Black ink is a seperate module from the color one so if all you do is print text, you won't have to change the color cartridge until you use color.

air,
are you sure you just didn't have a defective printer? Sounds like that may be the case. It's funny you mention the Epson Stylus Color 800. That was my previous printer and I hated it. That stupid warm up cycle, bad print output on anything but Epson's coated paper, noisy, ect. I really hated that printer. The only reason I got it in the first place was because it was one of the few printers out there that had a mac serial port(I got my first Mac in Feb 99. A Powerbook G3 that didn't have USB).

I'm really happy with my Canon S 600, it's fast, quiet and ink is cheap too...
OS X drivers are pretty good with a lot of options.
Go and try it, I'm sure you won't be disapointed !

I just said this to someone in another thread..
I love my Epson 740 and 777. Simple, cheap good printers I use for non-professional work. Works with OS X and I am quite happy. Please realize that I use it for simple printing, nothing heavy, like photos and such. I love it because it does what it should and I have had zero problems.
FYI, Lexmark just announced a $200 laser printer. It might be worth checking out. I have no experience with Lexmark, but I just thought I'd mention it.

I use a Tektronix 740 color laser on my network and print straight postscript to it and it prints beautifully. You could probably find one of these on Ebay for around $1000. The newer models are better, but the prices are not. The shipping on one of these Phasers is pretty high since they weigh over 100 lbs. The toner cartridges are pretty expensive too, but you don't have to change them out every 2 days like you do with ink jet printers, and as for output, well... there's no comparison!
