It seems to be a logical conclusion that Apple will begin manufacturing and shipping it's own 2-button mice relatively soon. With OS X now shipping on all new computers the demand for a 2-button mouse is, if not there already, then likely to surface soon. If the speculation about OS X 10.1 being announced at MWNY is true, it seems likely that OS X will also become the default OS, and not just a secondary OS. In this case it would seem foolish for Apple to NOT start shipping a 2-button mouse with their new computers, as at that point the majority of new users would be using OS X, and would therefore want a 2-button mouse to take advantage of the built in support. It would also most likely make OS X seem more attractive to PC users who are considering switching to Mac. That's just my 2©. What does everyone else think?

I agree that it may seem logical but from what I remember, if Apple does make multibutton mice, they won't have scroll wheels. Jobs has supposedely gone on record as saying he hates the scroll wheel (I love mine frankly) so I doubt we'd ever see an Apple branded scroll mouse as long as Steve is CEO. Then again, Apple always manages to suprise us

Dave

10.1 being the default os on new macs this July?! That'd be the beginning of the end for Apple.

Unless other things are also announced. Like a good stable version of AppleWorks. Once that's out OS X will basically have everything the average user needs.

Well the built in support for the second mouse button in OS X is actually complimented by built in support for the scroll wheel as well (cocoa apps by default and carbon with some work). Another interesting thing to note is that OS X actually supports 32 forms of input from a input(mouse) device...hmmm.

That's why I'm waiting for a direct brain to mac input device. That'd b awesome. Who needs speech recognition when you can think pages of text onto your screen every minute! And if they could come up with a way for you to think images/videos onto ur mac... They could call it the MacMeld.

If the mouse had a scroll wheel that would highlight the fact that you can't scroll finder windows with one... can't have that!

True, but...the fact that they made the Cocoa API natively support scroll wheels in every application by default show that they see the future Mac to use scroll wheels. As far as the finder goes, it is Carbon and still as work in progress as far as Mac OS X 10.0.x is concerned. Apple is working on everything people here are bitching and impatient about. Apple knows this, Apple will make it work. But they are a relatively small company and only have some many dollars and people to throw at any given project. Not thousands or even hundreds like other large OS vendors.

Perhaps Apple should:

1) Do a deal with Logitech to supply all the mice for future Macs. I have the Cordless Optical Wheel Mouse and I love it. Once you've gone scroll wheel you'll never go back.

2) Buy Logitech. Simply stamp a big Apple logo on all their products. Allow Logitech to operate as an independent division and sell non-Apple branded products as well.

Apple (comapny and us users) are still very hesitant to get a 2 button mouse becuase we've been defending the one button mouse to those pc users for years, and now to jsut switch over, it woul dbe rough on all our egos. as far as the wheel mouse, i have the perfect solution!!! Get a trackpad, like what is on pwoerbooks, adn put it on the mouse, so you can have up adn down adn left and right motion, and still no moving parts, it would be sweet. and since the whole mouse is the button, the '2nd' butotn woul dhave to be something creative.

Perhaps it won't happen, but I'm intrigued by the concept. Tapping and double-tapping right on the mouse! The mouse itself for broad movements across the screen, and the trackpad for fine movements. Interesting...

I think they should make a 2-button mouse as a BTO option for those who want it. Simple as that

IBVA

These guys used to advertise on Macintouch a few years ago. Kinda freaky if you ask me, especially "brain wave created artwork"...

Yeah, but that's not nearly as cool as what I'm waiting for. When, oh, when, will the world catch up with my imagination!?
