Just made the jump to a new iBook (white) from my old PB1400, and want to connect my HP 5MP LaserJet to the new machine. Is this possible, and if so, what do I need (I'm aware there are serial-USB converters, but want to know if they will work in this case before I spend the $50+ to get one).

Thanks.

Keyspan makes the best serial-USB converter and their website says it isn't compatible. Double-check your manual for the printer. I think the 5MP might have been configured for LacalTalk instead of serial. If that's the case, your only choice is a LocalTalk to ethernet converter like Farallon's iPrint LT. That goes for under $100.

For the 5MP, you need an Asante OR Farallon Ethertalk to Appletalk converter, about $100 mailorder. I have a 6MP. If you're going to network any older macs with that (say, the older 1400) then you should look into some of the Asante products that support multiple connections on one box.
He can be fixed -- you can't.

I have a 5MP, and I have connected it to a new G4 via an Asante local-talk to ethernet adapter (about $100), Actually I connected it to a linksys router, so I can print to it from the G4 or my G3 laptop, it all works flawlessly. Email for any ?s
