I'm sure that you're all aware that prices for laser printers are dropping precipitously. Now both Lexmark (E210) and Samsung make laser printers for $200. And HP offers the 2100 for $399. Is the HP worth twice the price? The only major advantage I can think of the $399 HP is that it has PostScript emulation, which means that it can operate without any third-party software, whereas I suppose that the Lexmark for $200 has custom drivers. The HP also has a faster processor (90 MHz instead of 66), more RAM (8 MB instead of 4), 1200 dpi (instead of 600), 15ppm (instead of 12), an instant-on fuser, and something like less than a 10 second delay before the first page shoots out. Oh, here's another thing: I think that the Lexmark's print cartridge can only print about 1000 pages before needing to be replaced.

Who makes the best all-around laser printer under $400?

I think Brother makes an inexpensive printer for $280 that seems to be okay. Some of the fonts aren't as sharp as a postscript printer, but one of the nice things is that the paper tray is ENCLOSED in a drawer.

I have the low end lexmark optra E310, it's a postscript printer, and the toner cartridge has yet to run out on me after a couple of years of somewhat light printing. But the paper sits on top and come out a bit curled, although nothing too bad...

I'm using the Optra E312L. It uses the Mac OS built-in Laserwriter 8 driver. Great, inexpensive laser printer. 4 MB ram, 600 dpi, 12 ppm, and the print cartridge will print up to 6000 pages, not 1000. Print quality is outstanding. It's connected to my G4 533, and I share it with my iBook 500 via Apples USB printer sharing. Paid $249 for it about 6 months ago. As a side note, I recently had a problem with it, and I called Lexmark. No bull, they overnighted me a new printer. They even paid for shipping to return the old one. No questions asked. Great customer service.

I could give you some advise based on 5 year old technology, but things have vastly improved since then. Check out MacWorld Magazine (just got mine two days ago). They have a large section where they compare different types of printers, including lasers.
