I currently have a 10GB iPod and am worried that it may not able to play the new AAC format that I'm sure Apple will use as a standard. Is the compression decoding a firmware item that can be upgraded or is it a hardware decoder?

I heard from the ThinkSecret site that Apple is planning to release a 20GB iPod next week with AAC support. So it makes me think whether or not the decoder is a hardware thing.

A software update should be all it needs. In the past, firmware updates have allowed mp3 players to support other formats (like when Windows Media Format started getting big). The iPod has a hard drive, RAM, 2 processors, and a fairly robust operating system, so I'm sure it can handle such an upgrade.
