Apple is working at a feverish pace to finish up its initial foray into the cellular phone market, but reliable sources report the new device will not be announced until Macworld Expo San Francisco in January 2007.

Apple will pack several high-end features into its phone, including a 3-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch display, and complete iTunes/iPod features and integration, sources with direct connections to the company's plans report.

I pray this is all true.....and that it also works seamlessly with AddressBook, iCal and iPhoto. I'm so sick of the little gotchas encountered when trying to sync my Mac to other phones (and my current Sony W800 is one of the more Mac friendly models). I would easily pay $500 for such a phone...as long as it's fairly svelt, and I think it will be.

Ooh, I skimmed that TS article, but didn't even notice the 3-megapixel camera bit. That's good to hear. I've been kinda waiting around for a phone compelling enough to replace my Sony Ericsson K750i. And while I was figuring Apple's take on it would be amazing UI- and integration-wise, I also kinda worried that they'd concentrate more on music and have an extra-crappy camera or none at all. Hope I can find a way to get a T-Mobile contract-extension discount on the thing.

Another interesting note is the recent MacRumors post on the topic. Not because of the picture, which they admit is an artist's rendition, but because they cite one of their own reliable sources, instead of their usual practice of aggregrating news from other sites. MacRumors' own sources don't get mentioned much, but they tend to be quite good, for example when they accounted for MR's last-minute scoop on the 12" and 17" PowerBooks at MWSF 03.
