Hi all... have just gotten a new Cube and iBook in the past few weeks. I am in the market for a Firewire hard drive, it will be used to store and back-up MP3's, web doc's, word doc's, and maybe one day iMovies. Basicly I want something cheap as possible less than $300, that stores about 20-30GB, would be nice if it was small and quiet, and not to ugly. I like VST drives, but they are all very $$$, but the thought of not needing a AC adaptor is nice. What do you all like?

The VST is very nice (we have the 20 Gig). I agree it's a bit pricey. We also have a 30 Gig Maxtor/Pyro Drive kit (picked up at outpost.com), and it was significantly cheaper than the VST. It works great too, and is pretty quiet as well.

Maxtor has a 40GB drive that I've seen online for $279. That's probably the highest capacity drive you can get for under $300. There have supposedly been a lot of problems with the Maxtor drives in the past, but they are now shipping a newer version (silent upgrade so you'll really need to look for it). The easy way to tell the difference is that the new one does not have a power switch on it. You don't want the older one.

I just purchased a Maxtor 40gig a few weeks ago. I use it with a Lombard/FireWire2Go card. I have had a few incidents with it disconnecting it, but otherwise it has worked great. I hope to never use the SCSI port on my laptop again.

I bought mine at Frys electronics for 259 not including Tax. I think I have seen it online for 239. Their 80gig was 359.

MacNN just published a review of the Maxtor and Western Digital Firewire drives. Go to the Reviews page and it should be there. Either of those should do the job if 5400 RPM is fast enough for you. The reviews indicate that the drives did fine with video, although I've read in a number of places that 7200 RPM is preferred.

If you need or want a 7200 RPM drive, your cheapest way to go is to buy an IDE drive, then put it in a Firewire enclosure (AST Pyro at outpost.com is $139).

two more options to consider, that i certainly am:
madlogix.com 40GB just went to $199 yesterday.
5400rpm, 3 year drive war. 1 year box war.
otherworldcomputing.com 30GB for $219
same warranty.

also other world has the new firewire/ide bridge, i think they are a bit pricey.

the only thing i don't know about these drives is whether they are fanless or not. i think i read on that macnn review that the maxtor is fanless.
