Has anyone heard or had any success with external Firewire drives for DV?

I was looking at:

<a href="http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/index.htm" target="_blank">http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/index.htm</a>

FireVue... pathetic web site and horrible design... but if it works.... we need expandable storage solutions for our DV projects and mini movies.

Thanks!

Any firewire drive that runs at 7200rpm should be ok for DV. You can do it cheap and buy a case, and then buy a bare drive and build it yourself (Very easy). Or pay a little more and get a pre-built one. Either way, make sure you get a case with the Oxford-911 chipset, it can only help. (makes for faster transfers) Oxford-911 is the equiv of a ATA-100 controller, although I've heard it only runs at 40MB/sec Still not bad.

No problems with an OWC Mercury Elite 60 GB. However, keep in mind that you may have problems with DV transfer if you connect your camera to the drive, rather than directly to your Mac.
