Hello all,

I am looking around at 19 inch monitors to get an idea of the price for a nice gaming monitor. I really don't have more than $500 for a monitor, so an LCD is out of the question. Also, since LCD's have a single native resolution, they are lousy for games (right?).

There is one certain thing about any monitor I look at: It has to be black, I hate beige monitors and always will. Since Apple no longer makes CRT's, the only nice looking monitors are black. Currently I am looking at the IBM 19" G96 for around $420. Is it any good? It looks okay on paper, but I'll have to look at it in a store, I know. Any other recommendations? I know LaCie's good, but they're monitors are designed for graphics and are way out of my reach pricewise.

This doesn't look like a flat screen...is it?

I replaced my Apple ASD 17" with a Viewsonic 19" PF750. I find it to be very good foe what I do (graphic design/prepress layout). It has a flat screen and supports multiple resolutions. Check out the specs in detail at Viewsonic's website:

The monitor is easy to calibrate and the color is very good. In addition the on screen controls are quite accurate. I believe you will also find it within your price range. Search the web for the best price.

Good Luck,

Frank

I am presently considering a Samsung SyncMaster 900NF for my PM 9500/200. It has been ranked in theC|net Top 5 19" Monitors category and goes for only $350. The screen is also completely FLAT

Although I as well enjoy black peripherals, I will not pay an additional $50 for the same thing just because it's black. But since you have up to $500, I guess you can do whatever you want to.

Hello,

I am here at Macworld NY on a new PowerMac G4 800 Dual.

I found a great 19" monitor—the NEC/Mitsubishi FP950+. It comes in black (no extra charge or anything), for $380.

Not bad.
