Looking for an externally powered usb extension cable. I've got an "Active" cable that gets it's power from the bus, but it's very temperamental and scews up other stuff (USB/SCSI adapter and USB CD burner). It also crashes my Kensington turbomouse settings when I plug in my Firewire drive. An Apple Tech mentioned a USB extension that has it's own power supply that might be more stable.

There are several, and pretty cheap. I got one from Best Buys. I forget the maker, but it works fine.

let me clarify. I need to extend my USB connections about 20 feet. This is beyond the allowable USB lenght without a repeater of some sort. The one I have runs on the USB bus power. I need one that has it's own power supply. Geffen makes one that is a monitor extension as well, but it's $500. Best Buy does not carry this type of extension (that I know of).

Wouldn't a powered USB hub act as a repeater? If so, those are really cheap. My Macally 4-port was under $40.

I have a powered MacSense Hub I picked up for $19.95. You should be able to put any powered hub in the middle of the chain to maximize the useable distance. For 20-40 bucks it's almost a no-brainer just to pick one up and see how it will do. Chances are you will need the extra ports someday whether it works or not.
