It was probably because the playlists were gone when you loaded iTunes 3. If you have it set to update the iPod when it is connected since there are no playlists it erases the whole damn thing. I did it once, no big deal but annoying as heck.

If this is a "feature" not a bug, iTunes should certainly present a dialog box warning that previously stored data will be erased.

ok, i guess this worries me.

i have not plugged the ipod into the g4 since upgrading (it's charging off the g3 right now)

i have all my playlists intact in itunes 3, so i see no impending issues.

and i'll blindlyu plug it in later and assume all is well...
