Apple was kind enough to e-mail me (and 40 million others, I'm sure) today about the Macworld announcements. At Macworld, JBL apparently has announced a new three-piece speaker system -- the JBL Creature.

I'm about ready to upgrade my two-piece Pro Speakers setup, but am confused. JBL/Harman-Kardon alone have 5 or 6 systems appropriate for the Mac. Other than appearance, it seems to me that the main difference is whether it plugs into a USB port (Soundsticks) or the headphones jack (everything else, I think). The Creature is a headphone jack system.

Is there any downside to going with a headphone jack connection or upside to a USB connection? The Creature is cheaper than the Soundsticks and looks attractive to me.

Hi, i saw these speakers yesterday at Macworld. Essentially, the system consists of two satellite speakers identical to those in the iMac DV (crt model), and a very powerful sub woofer. These speakers are smaller than your pro speakers, and thus i would have to go against recommending you "upgrade" to them. I would suggest rather that you buy an iSub to go along with your pro speakers, as this configuration will inevitably produce better sound better, as the cones are much larger. I have to admit the creature did sound good, then again, they had quite a few of them going at once when i heard them. As far as usb versus mini-jack goes, i have found a usb connection to sound a bit better. Many people, however have experience problems with usb systems, as apparently the driver is a bit buggy, and can often cause systems to lose sound output until they are restarted. Personally, i decided not to deal with these problems, and bought the mimi-jack fed H/K champagne 695. For the record, JBL and H/K speakers all sound very good. The soundsticks are still the best really, then the champagnes, which have 4 crt imac speakers, and then the Creature, which only have two.

I think I'm leaning toward a mini-jack system simply because I'd rather not use up a USB port and leave the headphone jack virtually unused. (Unless there is a noticeable difference in sound, and it sounds like there may not be. I've used mini-jack speakers on portable CD players and found the sound to be acceptably good.)

So I guess that sets me up for the Creature or the Champagnes...
