What has changed on the new 10GB iPod and do you know of anyone with great deals on the current (old) model?

It's all right there on Apple's website. Just look for yourself.

I thought Apple users had more comaraderie than this. Secondly this was a two part question and Apple.com does not have closeout iPods. Certainly I could search through all the online sites "myself" to find the best deal, but then that really defeats the purpose of a user forum.

Changes in 10 GB:
- 10% thinner (0.72 inches now, 0.78 inches before)
- cover on firewire port
- includes case w/belt clip and new earphones, as well as wired remote
- now appears to have 1 year warranty (check specs page, look at bottom) versus 90 day warranty before

deals on old iPod:
Amazon has 5 GB for $299, 10 GB for $349 (add to cart to see prices).
12" PB 1 GHz Combo, 60GB, 512MB, AE
40GB iPod

Apple will honor the 1-year warranty even for the discontinued models.

Sorry, you caught me in a mood. Had to snap at someone... might as well be some faceless name on the internet. My apologies. Nevertheless, the point, I think, is valid. I feel like these forums should be where you go when you've tried everything you can first. If we have a lot of people just asking questions without doing their homework it'll just end up being a lot of noise. I ask for a lot of help on these boards, and feel like I give it as well. But I never come here before I try to solve something myself. There's too much clutter already. Anyway, sorry again for being brusque... but in the future see what you dig up first, then let us know about it.

If you can get Apple education pricing, it's $369 (almost 400 w/ tax) . . . I went for it because of the new earphone control, free clip-on case, newer earphones, a tad thinner than the others . . . and heck, I've held out for so long -- finally getting one = wheeeee!

Whatever the price, it will bring back some nice music flow to life . . . mmm hmmm . . .

so all of the advertisements around the internet for $350 10 gig ipods are actually for the previous generation, that aren't 10% thinner and come with the remote and case?

Who the hell are you to go around correcting other posters or establishing poster etiquette. Oh by all means, please censor me too.

Some people don't have time to sit in front of their computers and hunt down information, so they go to a reliable forum and ask questions that may seem obvious to you, not that it's any of your business. As far as I can tell this is still an "regular joe" users forum and not a pro user only forum. Main point, relativity.

Corp miler: looks like MacMall has some old 10GB iPods for $350 too. I looked around, and you'll want to be careful, outpost has the 5GB price corrected as does MacZone, but their older 10GB are still $500 when I checked.

Another thing you might want to keep in mind is the solid state scroll wheel, to me this and the remote and clip are worth the extra fifty.

Other things I found, the depth of all three players are different, with the new 10GB being the thinest @ 0.72in and the 20GB the thickest @ 0.84in. The biggest one is also the heaviest at 204g and the 5-10GB are the same weight at 185g. The solid state selector is only on the new 5 and 10's, the 5 is still the wheel selector, as far as I can tell it is exactly the same as the older 5 gigger, but I am not sure about the door cover for the firewire port.

Good hunting.

AFAIK the 5gb model did not change anything except the price, no wheel, no remote, no door cover, no size change.

Yes, that is what I meant, thanks. And thanks for the confirmation of an unchanged 5GB iPod.

Slider, you're right. I've should've just ignored the post. It's just that when I saw the title, I actually thought the poster had some new info to offer ("10gb iPod changes and best price") Instead, it was just a question that I thought he could've easily answered himself and, like I said, I was already in a mood.

Of course, it's not my job to police bbs etiquette... but macs are my hobby and I do spend a lot of time here. So, as a member who tries hard to contribute, I don't think I'm completely off base in suggesting people try to do a little homework first on easy questions.

Anyway, whatever... water under the bridge. Post away, people. I'll stay out of it.

The best difference is the fact that the scroll wheel isn't a wheel anymore ---- it's a trackpad.

it detects your thumb movement a la Powerbook.....

the best part is that now, the center button stays fixed when you press it, so you can't advance your selection by pressing the button with a slight "twist" of your thumb....

I like it a lot better....

I see that someone has posted that it is a track pad type thing -- is that really better? Has anyone used it? I could imagine that it would be inprecise.. the way if you aren't careful on an ibook trackpad the pointer flies all over the screen... also, wouldn't the wheel go crazy if it rubbed against something in your pocket? Then again, maybe not -- it certainly doesn't sound very advantageous to me.

I've not used the one on the ipod but I imagine it'll be a lot better.

I want a 10G iPod now!
