I finally took the plunge this week and updated to firmware 4.1.8 on my Pismo, because of Apple's supposed "dramatically improved system stability and performance", and my new RAM was still recognized

But now my system can't see my QPS Que!Fire 4x4x24 CD-RW drive! The drive has been working fine for almost a year. I've checked the firewire system extensions, and toast extensions. No discburner or iTunes. No firewire devices in Apple System Profiler. I checked cables and power, as well. I'm pretty sure the firmware update is responsible....

What can I do?!!

I am having a similar problem with a USB CD-RW. It worked just fine up until I installed OS X and the 9.1 that came with the OS X package. Now it refuses to acknowledge the CD-RW, and if I have the CD-RW plugged into one of the USB slots and my Trackball plugged into the other, the Trackball is inoperable until I reboot.

I have the same CDRW lucylawless, but it's working fine on my iMac after the upgrade. The only thing that I can think of is that your power cable may not be fully inserted into the CDRW. When you put a CD in, does the upper light flash and then turn amber? The lower light stays on, but I had problems with the upper [activity] light before. After I pushed the cable in securely the light flashed and it was recognized.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you--other than trying another FireWire cable; my QPS cable was flaky.

Good Luck.

well, mine fixed itself, somehow. I left town for two days, and when I came back, it just worked. I was preparing for a clean install and all that fuss, but I guess a time-out was all it needed. My other working theory is that it wanted a certain power-up sequence like that scene in Apollo 13, although that doesn't explain why the firmware update knocked it out in the first place (my practice is to leave the drive on all the time, and I restart my computer pretty regularly)

Good luck with yours, Bendejo. The only info I can offer you is that while away, I tested the firewire ports by using a LaCie burner, and using firewire target disk mode in both directions, and all three worked fine...

bendejo, your usb cd-rw stopped working when you installed 9.1 from the CD that came with OS X? i assume you're talking about it not working in OS 9.1, since OS X has no support for CD burning at all (yet).
what burner software are you using? does the Apple System Profiler see the drive? try disabling all of the drivers for your burner, and see if the trackball will work then when the burner is plugged in. then try reinstalling the burner's drivers and burning software.
one possible reason for your problem: did you have DiscBurner installed before upgrading? if not, and you use a program like Toast to burn, 9.1 installs DiscBurner. this may be the cause of your problem. If you use Toast to burn make sure DiscBurner is off; if you use DiscBurner, make sure your burner's driver is disabled and that you have DiscBurner 1.1

Yes, I am trying it from 9.1. I have been attempting to use Toast, I will try to see if DiscBurner is causing the error, and no I did not see it in the System Profiler. Thanks!

I removed the disc burner extension and reinstalled toast and now all is kosher again. Thanks.
