I'm getting a new G4. According to the specifications there is no longer audio in. I use this a lot but not at a pro level. What are the suggested options for a Firewire or PCI card for audio input? I have heard about USB audio in but I am skeptical of USB for this purpose. I don't need anything top of the line. Just to record programs from FM radio or perhaps old LPs.

[edit: I've done some searching and only can find the Griffin USB products. Not to knock these but is it really true that Apple no longer supplies audio input for their computers and the consumer level product is only available from a single source? ]

By the way, I think this was a silent price increase. Take away a feature that we now have to pay for. I also wonder how well that hardware will be integrated since it is not made by Apple. That was one of the benefits of buying a Mac, items like this were all integrated to the OS and well supported by Apple.

You have two good options. The iMic from Griffin which is USB or the SoundBlaster PCI card from Creative.

I bought the iMic. Very nice device. You can't go wrong with that!

I have a Creative Soundblaster on order, as I'm going to experiment with recording LPs this winter. I have a G4/400 from last November, and I've hooked up my stereo to the mic jack, and tried recording some cassettes, but the results were horrible, so I'm going to try the Creative card. I've read a few good reports on it, although I don't remember where. For audio stuff, you might also check out www.hitsquad.com. It's a huge audio site, and it takes some digging, but there's plenty of Mac stuff there.
