Hello.

I saw the Mac World New York and loved the new iPod for Windows. However, after checking it´s technical description, i realized that it might not have driver for Macintosh! Is that true or am I wrong?
If this really is right, wouldn´t it make it 500 bucks more expensive to "SWITCH" to Mac???

Thanks for the help.

The newest PCs have Firewire ports...why can't Apple just write a driver for Windows? Why is a different iPod required?

The iPod itself is not different. The included FireWire cable is different (6 to 4 pin instead of 6 to 6) and instead of iTunes being bundled, MusicMatch Jukebox is. If you're going to switch to the Mac, you don't need anything else since iTunes is preinstalled with all Macs.

Ok, here's another related question. My friend has an older 10 gig ipod, but since he has a generic PC laptop, he normally uses someone elses mac to transfer his mp3s. Is a new version of MusicMatch coming out that will recognize the ipod, or is he stuck with a Mac-only ipod?

You cannot charge a win ipod via the FW port. It has a FAT 32 file system. From what I heard yesterday at MWNY:

Buy mac ipod + xplay = work on windows
Buy win ipod = work only on win

1.) The Windows iPod will not charge via FireWire when using the 6 to 4 pin cable included. This is because the 4 pin FireWire connector does not carry power. If you use a 6 to 6 pin cable and connect it to a 6 pin port, it will charge, Mac or PC irregardless.

2.) The FAT 32 filesystem involves only the format of the hard drive. True, you cannot swap the same Windows iPod and transfer songs from both a Mac and a PC, but if you were to switch to a Mac, all you would have to do is reformat the hard drive in HFS+ format.
