I'm wondering, and I have not been able to get an answer from Apple yet, how those of you window's users who have purchased older models of the iPod will fair with attempting to update, if that's possible, your older iPods to Apple's Window's version. Given The PC version will sport a 4 to 6 pin firewire connector, I am not even sure this will be possible with a simple firmware update and hard drive reformatting to a Fat32 file system which I'm informed will be Apple's choice for PC users. In addition, Window's 95 and 98 users will be out of luck as well. The new PC iPods won't be supported by these older Oss. It would appear we Mac iPod users will have one big advantage over the PC iPod version. Our 6 pin to 6 pin connector with the additional 2 pins allow us Mac users to charge our iPod over the Firewire bus when connected to our computers.
I have talked several PC users into buying iPods and suggested they hold off buying xPlay and the other alternative in order to see what Apple has to offer. They love their iPods and the music I have put on their systems, but I still cannot reliably advise them on how they should proceed.
Does anyone know if it will be possible to upgrade the older model iPods to a Window's version?

After talking to the makers of xplay and apple yesterday at mwny, I think the op points out the exact problem (and why xpplay will still sell) - the win ipod is not the same exactly as the mac ipod.
So..
You can buy a mac ipod + xplay = work in windows
Or
You can buy a win ipod = work only on windows, not mac

I immediately thought xPlay was dead, but it maybe a more compelling solution than the Apple blessed version.

Why wouldn't it be possible to convert original 5/10GB iPods to be true Win iPods? There will obviously be a firmware update for all iPods to allow iCal to work. Get this update, reformat your iPod w/ FAT filesystem, then ether copy your files back or sync from MusicMatch. It should work great!
What I really want is a drive that can be shared on Winders machines so I can carry around family photos and show them to all my winders-using family.
