Can someone kindly advise me how to use hardware RAID1 in Mac OS X with the Acard's AEC-6880M with 2 x 160GB Maxtor drive?

I can see the drives as a single drive in Mac OS 9 when the DIP switches are set to RAID1 mode (1 - on; 2 - off), but when I try to boot Mac OS X, I'm forever stuck at

Checking disks
Mounting media
** /dev/rdisk1s6
QUICKCHECK ONLY: FILESYSTEM CLEAN

I can't boot the machine when the card is in RAID1 mode.... the reason I choose this card is this RAID1 support. BTW, the card firmware has been flashed to the latest version and the kernel extension on Mac OS X has been updated.

Can someone kindly help?
