I have a Maxtor external Firewire 80 GB that has worked fine until recently and now, even though I always shutdown, when booting it shows me The device was not put away properly and then says do I want to initialize it in another popup window.
I pull the plug and put it back several time before it finally catches, sometimes I have to reboot before it will mount.
Any thoughts on why this is suddenly happening?
Thanks,
nati

I've had this happen, too, in OS 9. In X it always mounts.

What I do, and it's a bit of a hassle, is to drag the the drive to the trash before shutting down. Maxtor's software is a bit pissy.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

You should always unmount (drag to trash or Command+E) the drive before shutting down. Firewire drives are really picky about this, especially in OS X, and you could corrupt the drivers.

However, if you're already doing this, try this procedure when booting:
1. Unplug the FW cable.
2. Boot your Mac.
3. Turn on the FW drive.
4. Plug in the FW cable.

The disk should mount normally.

thanks, I will try unmounting which I haven't been doing. It always mounts in 9 but almost never in X although it never failed until the last few weeks. Have had it for about 4 months.

The chipset was crappy. Maybe they've improved by now.
