since tibooks have only 1 FW port, what are the best solutions for storing data? I have a DV camcorder, and that will be occupying the FW port. I dont want a USB hard drive. Will a firewire hub work? FW pc card? I'm holding out for a bluetooth pc card tho...

suggestions?

Just get a Firewire external device with two FW ports on the back. (Most have this).

I have no problem at all capturing footage from my DV cam to an external FW harddrive, while the DV cam is plugged into the external which is itself plugged into the FW port of my TiBook 550.

I do all of my capture by the way to the external since there's just not enough space left on my internal drive- which would seem to be even more taxing, since the system is capturing from an external and writing back to another all through one port. Just do yourself a favor and get a good FW external ( I prefer putting them together myself) with Oxford 911 and a nice large capacity 7200rpm drive.

Make sure you do this setup only with the external running off it's own power.

A powered Firewire hub will work too. I've found them for as little as $35 here at computer shows. Search the net if you go that route.

I've experienced crashes (although a while back, using OS 10.1.3) with my TiBook 400, but I believe the first gen TiBooks had known problems with Firewire.

ext fw is the way to go right now. it is fast and cheap. if you buy your own enclosure or one that lets you easily swap drives, you have a very economical way of backing up and archiving data, in addition to storing massive amounts of multimedia etc.

If that's what you want, cool, but know there are some inherent drawbacks. Laptop drives cost more for less capacity- also they are slower at 4400rpm or 5400rpm tops.

If you really want to be sure with video capture, go for an enclosure that can handle a full sized 3.5" hard drive at 7200rpm.
