Greetings,

Canon announced new scanners this past week.

<a href="http://www.macnn.com/news.php?id=15246" target="_blank">http://www.macnn.com/news.php?id=15246</a>

According to PCWorld, the LiDE 30 is considered the successor to the CanoScan N1240U.

<a href="http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,102734,00.asp" target="_blank">http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,102734,00.asp</a>

Does anyone have more information on these scanners, and in particular the comparison? I was all set to buy the 1240U today, but in doing some research, came across the information about the LiDE 30. Not only is it newer, it comes with a newer software bundle, supports USB 2.0, and claims to have a better signal to noise ratio than their previous model (which I assume to be the N1240U).

It is about $30.00 less expensive than the N1240U too. It is available for pre-order and should be available by the end of July.

I bought a N1220U scanner about a year ago. It still looks brand new, but it is sitting on the shelf b/c cannon just does not want to write drivers for it so that I could use it under OSX. I am not getting another Canon scanner for sure. No support is really bad, it was a very expensive paperweight!

Yes, I know the problem. I'm sitting here with a UMAX Astra connected to my G4. The driver works in Classic, but it is still a hassle (and not a good driver at that).

Unlike my UMAX, your Canon N1220U(as well as the new ones) are known to work quite well with Hamricks Vuescan driver.

<a href="http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html" target="_blank">http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html</a>

UMAX has pretty much stated they won't be writing drivers for their older scanners. Canon hasn't made such a statement, and is clearly working on new drivers.

Reading deeper in the Vuescan Web site, it appears the UMAX USB has some sort of parallel to USB converter internal to the unit, and that is the main reason it won't likely be supported in OS X by anyone.

Just wondering if you went ahead and ordered the Canoscan LIDE30? My HP Fax machine just died so I need to make a quick decision on a scanner.
TIA for your reply.
