I finally decided to buy an HP LaserJet 1200 yesterday. It's normally $399 and nobody ever sells it for more than a $10 discount. I used nextag for pricing comparison a month ago and they were all in a narrow range. So I used nextag again yesterday and all sorts of people are selling it cheap. MacMall, that bastion of high prices, is advertising it online for $365 although my last paper catalog was still $399. But MacMall doesn't have it in stock.
Is this printer about to be discontinued and replaced with a newer model? Is HP just clearing the channel?

It's a great printer. Fast, has good image quality and mine has only jammed once in almost a year.
I don't know if they are discontinuing it, but even if they are, I'm sure the cartridges will still be available for quite a while.

i had an hp1100 back when i used a winbox (it had a parallel port, i sold it when i advanced to being a mac user). it was a great little machine. the toner cart lasted for as long as we had the printer (over a year) doing a couple prints a day or so. the 1200 is just as good, although i liked the vertical sheet load of the 1100 over the "sticking out tray" of the 1200 as it makes the machines footprint a little unwieldly.
[edit] we paid 400 for ours and i dont feel any worse for it. you could buy a couple crappy printers or just up and get a single good one. you definitely get what you pay for in the printer market.[/edit]

I think the "sticking out tray" is one of the reasons the 1200 jams so infrequently. My partner has a 6L, with the vertical paper tray. If you leave paper in it after a while the paper buckles and you start to get feeding problems. That doesn't seem to happen with the 1200.

well. that is certainly true. i guess my other reason i dont like the "sticking out tray" is my cats like to sit on it and theyre getting so fat i think its gonna break off which would make me not happy.

But you get the opposite problem with the vertical tray. My cat was facinated with the way the paper would slide down in it. So he stuck his paw in and almost got snagged by the feed mechanism.

yikes. thats not good either. as much as it annoys me with them sitting on the tray, it would make me even sadder if they got their little paws stuck in the feed rolls.

Our cats hate our computers and won't go near them. I don't have to worry about paws in printers. I do have to worry about them chewing the cables. iPod headphone cables are fascinating cat toys.
Oops, this is turning into an "other" thread. Back to topic.
HP.com is out of stock of the 1200. Buy.com is out of stock. Amazon is out of stock. Tech Depot is out of stock. CompUSA.com is out of stock. MacMall is out of stock. I know there are places with the 1200, my CompUSA down the road has it, but this is very unusual if they're not clearing the channel. HP doesn't usually screw up on stocking the channel like this. (Maybe they're too busy running full page newspaper ads about the merger to thing about selling printers.)

Try staples.com. They have them as a banner ad. Presumably they wouldn't do that if they had none in stock.
I just got mine at the local staples store. That way I got "free shipping."
