The sound sticks look nice and fit well with a tight desktop (orgainized), but you can do better with your money. If you have the space look into the Swan Diva M200 at: http://www.av123.com/divaproducts.html
I just picked up a pair for $199 and they are breaking in very nicely, very rich sound. Excellent build quality as well, though large like a book shelf speaker. I can guarantee that they'll blow away the soundsticks.

Sound sticks are the devil in OSX. That stupid USBAudio bug makes me want to strangle Steve.
Sadly, they have worked pretty well plugged into this XP machine I am using this week. Just a few snap, crackle, pops every now and then.
I will love my sticks when that bug is fixed though.

Aside from the USB drivers, of course

I've loved my soundsticks for the 15+ months I've had them...
You may get marginally better sound for the same price, but I guarantee the girls will like the soundsticks more
