Here's my setup...we have a dsl line split in out apartment with a router, and 4 computers set up. I have a powermac g4, and a athlon pc i built (just for my Chemical engineering programs i must run), and my roommates both have PC, but their own printers. Basically my issue is..I need to print up some stuff from these programs I must run on the PC..is there a way to share my printer somehow between the two..not through a physical usb cable? (the mac and pc are in separate rooms).

Anyways..any help would be appreciated. I do have Dave 3.1..not sure if there is some feature in there that I could use. Sorry for my complete lack of knowledge on this matter, and I thank you in advance for any advise that is given.

I've been wondering this same question. Perhaps the Networking forum would be more interested in our concern?

I'm living in an apt. using a wireless iBook and a PowerBook G4 connected to a Linksys hub and cable internet. Perhaps there's some way to buy a USB-compat. wireless transmitter that could be linked to the network? Maybe if you could directly connect your printer to the router you could access it with both PC and Mac? Check with the network forum - I think I've seen this question there before, but can't remember what everyone said. Sorry I can't help any further!

Epson makes an ethernet adapter for that printer. Go to Epson's website and search "axis" and it will come up. Plugged into your network all machines should see it with no problem. I use it with my Epson shared with all 3 computers in my house (all Macs) and it's great.

The Epson 740 does not have acess to an ethernet adaptor, However it does have 3 ports.....

Serial, Parallal and USB.

You can wire your mac through usb, and your pc through Parallal..

No problems at all, I have done it myself...

Checked out the link and apparently it's new and does exist. It looks like it has a SCSI, serial, and ethernet ports, so it could be hooked up in a variety of ways with many of Epson's printers. Guess it could be hooked up to a wireless WAP/router and used wirelessly. Cool. James' idea might be a little more reasonable for the price consious The adapter is pricey at $159.

The adapter does work with the 740. I've used it and have sold it to other people who use it on a daily basis. When you search for axis click the link it results with and you can see a list of compatible printers. It is expensive, about the same as 2 entry level Epson C40s. You might be better off with another printer.

Thanks everyone..i ended up just getting another printer..an Epson Photo 820 for $70...not bad at all. Since my two comps were far apart, I couldn't easily use a usb and parallel connection to hook both computers up to it. After I did a little more research, I found out that the dsl router that I had purchased (D-Link) for around $30 at the time with a special deal..I find out there are two versions of this router..one normal one..and one with a print server...it looks like I just lucked out, or else this task would have been extremely easy! Oh well..needed a faster pritner anyways to print out my 100 page laboratory discertations. Thanks everyone!

Where did you get a Photo 820 so cheap? That's a great price! And a great printer. I have a Photo 780 and love it. Epson is the best in photo printing.

Staples has this for ~ $150. I had a $30 off $150 coupon I received in an email from them..and currently epson has a $50 rebate on this printer..so it wasn't $70 out of the pocket..but rather $120 out of pocket..with $50 coming back to me....

Or if you were using it with 2 Windows PCs, you could just right-click the icon of the printer on the PC it was connected to, select Sharing... and turn sharing on.

But we are Mac users and apparently don't need to share printers. Oh wait...

Come on Apple!

Mac OS X is now over a year old. The assumption should now be that someone is using OS X unless stated otherwise.
