I'm wondering the best way to make a HP DeskJet 870 serial printer available to all the computers on a small AppleTalk network. The ideal solution would be to use the driver to create a localtalk bridge. I don't know if this is possible; is it? If that fails, it looks like the next best solution is to get a USB Serial adapter and simply connect the other computer to the printer directly whenever needed. I'd really like to keep costs down and do it with software! Aahh! Help!

Yes, you need to buy my Farallon iPrint LT :-) I've used it with an HP 855Cse for just a little bit (retired it because I bought an HP 970Cse...which requires a $200 box to share it!!!. It works perfectly.
It's very similar to the one here: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI...tem=1225834824
But I also have two LocalTalk boxes that go with it. Essentially what happens is that you hook up one LocalTalk box to the printer's serial/localtalk port, run the included 4-strand telephone cable to the box and then into the iPrint LT adapter. I've got both the crossover cable for direct connection to a mac, and the standard ethernet cable for connection to a hub/switch. One localtalk box I have is an end connector perfect for small or portable devices, and the other is a box with two ports. If you use more than one localtalk device you can run a cable from one localtalk device to another and then to the iPrint LT bridge. If you only use one device with that 2-port box, you can use the included terminator to end the connection.
You can see that there are 5 status lights to help you see.
I'll sell you my set for $60 (I paid twice that for just the iPrint LT, not including the localtalk connections)
I've got pictures of them at this site: http://www.schalliol.com/sale/iPrint%20LT/

I too looked for a software localtalk bridge, but the product that did exist years ago no longer works and doesn't support this. I tried it. Also, the nice thing about this is that you don't need to take any time away from a computer and it can operate independantly of machines.
BTW, here's my eBay user feedback: http://cgi2.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAP...=jon.schalliol

schalliol, it is appreciated when you contribute your knowledge, experiences and advice. however, please in this forum limit your posts to that, and leave out the sales pitch. A link to an ebay page is fine, and a description of the system to be used to solve the problem is fine, but please no posts that are just sales pitches. Thanks you.

I'm sorry you think that was just a sales pitch. I had the same issue before. I just happened to be selling my solution at the same time I saw this.
