But unfortunately, they are for only these scanners.....
Scanner drivers for the CanoScan N670U, N676U, N1240U scanners
If someone with a CanoScan 656U tries these drivers, please post your results.

Is it true this is no ap, just a driver? In other words, you have to use twain acquire from within another ap to use this? I don't use photoshop, and I heard the graphic converter twain acquire doesn't work. So this would seem to be of very limited usefulness. I want to scan and export to the desktop. If anyone could confirm before I run out and buy a canon that would be great

Yes, it is true. Bur remember this is still a beta. I have been using OSX exclusively and the Canon 1240u works perfectly in classic mode. If you need to start scanning, go ahead and buy the scanner and it will work. Soon (he says hopefully) you'll be able to do it without classic.

Yes, they don't work currently with Graphic Converter (the only TWAIN capable program on my laptop) but the Canon drivers work great in classic (as opposed UMAX). I recommend the portable USB-powered scanners to anyone with a laptop - my iBook and scanner fit in my carry bag and I'm all set!

I just got the n1240u and boy am I glad I came here.
I thought I was going crazy cuz I couldn't get GC to
work. Now I know why. Just wondering has anyone figured
out how to get the other software updated, like the OCR
or the toolkit. Also if you want a great deal I got mine
on Buy.com for $123. with free shipping. Please Canon
make it X native.

You need an outside ap like Word or Omnnipage, in order with scan in X with canon. I just got one, found it excruciatingly slow, and exchanged it for an epson, which at least as has it's own, simple, scan to file ap carbonized.

Which Canon did you send back and which Epson did you buy? I've been considering the Canon 1240 and the Epson 1250. I've heard the Canon is a bit slower but the numbers I saw in online reviews were about 20-25% slower. Did you experience worse? I just like the idea of not having another AC brick and the Canons are AC free while the Epsons are tethered to the power supply.

I returned the Canon 670U for the Epson 1650 - not exactly apples to apples, I know, I ended up paying an extra $100. But I'd heard the Canon 1240 was also slow, so I didn't want to risk it again. Most of my scanning is at 200 dpi, full pages, the canon took 45-50 seconds, and the epson 10-15 seconds; to me, that's more than enough to overcome the extra heft of the epson. Unless you're mobile and really need the slim scanner, get the epson.

Thank you. I went ahead and ordered the Epson 1250.

I just notices that Canon has removed the beta
os x driver from the website. Does anyone know
if it was causing problems? I really haven't
used it much since installing but don't want
it to mess up anything. Wish they would hurry
up and release a proper update.
