Undeniably lame, but why would they do that? Could it be a RoHS thing?

Have you addressed this to Apple? I'd be interested in what their response was. If the web page says "these specs" and they deliver a product with "those specs" then you haven't gotten what you though you were ordering. That's not Apple's style...
