Why is my Yamaha 6416S running off of a stock Apple SCSI card in a Rev. A G3 with a 450 Mhz SIF upgrade and OS 9.1 suddenly mucking up? It won't burn a CD... it gets to verification and freezes and the CD is unreadable. These are the messaged I got one particularly horrible time, one right after the other:

The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = HARDWARE ERROR
Sense Code - 0x09
TRACK FOLLOWING ERROR

The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code - 0x24
INVALID FIELD IN CDB

The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code - 0x2C, 0X04
CURRENT PROGRAM AREA IS EMPTY

I was using Toast 5. I tried downgrading to Toast 4 and same problem. What the heck is wrong?

Uh oh
Yamahas never go wrong and as such I don't know how to fix one!
Oh dear...

Ok, first, wipe Tosat 5 off your disc, completely.
Get rid of iTunes and DiscBurner as well. All the Authoring Support extensions, etc - "Toast" them.

Now, reinstall Toast 4 Deluxe.

Give it a nice RAM cache.
Check the SCSI termination - and try to burn a data CD from some files on your HD.

What kind of burn were you doing when these problems occured? Disc to disc? *crosses fingers*

I'm still screwed. I completely erased toast 4 and 5, and reinstalled 4.2. The "self test" feature in Toast says it's OK. What is happening is it's not burning any data. I burn a CD it goes through the process, I skip verification, and look at the back of the CD - it still looks blank! And of course when you do do verification it says sector 0 is unreadable.

I did open my Mac up, and there was an enormous amount of dust all over every part of the inside... motherboard, fans, drives... could the extreme dust have damaged the little laser mechanisms? Anyone ever heard of that? I'm gonna take the drive out and blow compressed air into it. If that don't work I'm gonna try it in another machine.
