I am the sad owner of a QPS CD-R PX-W8432T firewire CD burner. I have had this drive for over a year now and only have a few hairs left to pull out due to the recurring "no CD drive found" messages.

This drive is making me crazy. It will work fine on my G3/266 (OrangeMicro USB/Firewire PCI card - running OS 9.1,Toast 5, Apple Firewire extension 2.7, and all the latest Toast/QPS updates) then out of the blue it will not be recognized. I go through the plug-unplug cables, turn off and on, and unplug the power cable (wait 30 seconds) then plug in again restart Toast . Most of the time one of these silly operations wil cause the drive to show up - but recently nothing I do will allow it to be recognized. I've tried it on a new iBook, and iMac (both running Toast 5) with no luck... My PCI card is working as I use it all the time with my DV camcorder - is it time to take the hammer to this CD-R?

Thanks for any pearls of wisdom...

I have had similar probs with a QueFire 12/10 CD-RW from QPS when trying to burn audio CDs from iTunes in OS X. Apple's page in the iTunes section regarding the QPS drives seems to indicate that they only recommend my type of Plextor mechanism-based drive when it has the 1.07 version firmware. Of course mine is 1.02 so I'm SOOL...
One day I might pull the drive out of the casing and stick it in a friend's PC to upgrade the firmware but what a crock that is! Plextor and QPS refuse to try to make available a firmware upgrade that would a) work over firewire (i'm sure there are sound technical reasons for this) or b) work with the bare drive out of the case and in an IDE capable Mac tower - G3 or G4, I'm not picky!!

Well.. now my drive has suddenly been recognized. In a last ditch effort I put a previously recorded CD-R in the drive and unplugged the power cable. Then I left the drive - and my Mac off for 12 hours. I then returned the power cable, turned on the drive and when I started up the Mac I watched the drive check the CD-R and my system startup stall - as if locked up - then suddenly I heard the disc mount and the drive was recognized... go figure.

I'm totaly disgusted with QPS drives. A coworker has another QPS drive (12X firewire) on his Mac (Cube running 9.2.2 / Toast 5) and he experiences exactly the same phenomenon. Anybody want to buy an 8X Quefire 8X CD-R/W... cheap??
