I am trying to access a network printer. It is a Lanier L055. I downloaded and installed the drivers.
I first tries to install the printer by going to Utilities--->Printer Setup Utility. I chose IP printer, and selected Line Printer Daemon - LPD. Then I entered the printer's IP address (I did this correctly). Under Print Using: I selected Lanier and selected the Lanier LD055 PS option (available after I downloaded the drivers from Lanier's Site). When I printed (a test file from Text Edit) I got gobly gook and a lot of blank pages.
I then went back to Printer Setup Utility and deleted the printer. I tried IPP this time instead of LPD. I completed the set up. This time when I tried to print I got a message that said "Unable to get printer status (client-error-forbidden)!" when I tried to print.
Does anyone have any idea how to set up this printer? Here are some clues.
The driver for the printer is a PS printer. But the printer says PCL. I am not really certain what PCL vs PS is, but I know that I have had similar issues in the past and I just can't remember what I did to get the printers to work.
I am using a Powerbook G4 15" 1.5GHZ running Mac OX 10.4.7 (haven't had time to update to 10.4.8 yet...I will do this although I am certain this is not the issue).
Thank you,
O

The symptoms sound to me like a PCL printer trying to print PostScript, and from what you write, it seems that's most likely the case.
I don't know whether that printer supports PostScript (which, like PCL, is a printer control language). It's possible that it supports it via upgrade only.
Try setting up the printer using LPD and using a generic PCL driver (try the highest version available, and go progressively lower if it doesn't work). It won't give you all the options, but it should print.

Sometimes the printers are set to pcl emulation, although they do -- in principle -- speak Postscript. For my Kyocera laser printer, there was a simple utility which set the standard emulation to Postscript for my interface of choice.

I'm almost following...I just need to know where to get a generic PCL driver...I'm gonna google that b/c I see Generic Post Script as an option, but no generic PCL as an option in my Printer Setup Utility. However, if there is a location where I can find a generic PCL driver please let me know.

Okay, I got it to work. I downloaded HPIJS and ESP Ghostscript for Mac OS X from http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/hpijs/
Once I installed them, I opened Printer Setup Utility, and selected IP Printer, LPD and used the Generic PCL6 Printer option.
Thank you much for your assistance!
