I have added a second internal HD and want to add a third - but I'm not sure if the g4 will support it.

I can see a spare power input but can't see a third IDE plug.

If I buy another IDE chain that has an additional plug - - will the machine support it?

thanks,
Kent

if you get an ultratek pci ide card, you can add four more HDs.

otherwise, you end up using the zip bay.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Yep, IDE only supports 2 devices, master and slave. If you get a IDE card, they usually come with two IDE busses, for a total of four drives.

If you got with putting your drive in the zip bay, buy a cheaper 5400 drive because the IDE I think is slowe,r 66mhz?, not sure how I know this but I remember hearing this.

I GOT WASTED WITH PHIL SHERRY!!!

The Zip bay is noticeably slower than the main IDE bus, but works fine. I have a drive in there and it's good for additional storage, but I don't edit any video on it or anything like that. If you need speed, get an IDE expansion card.

My G4 boxen has three drives. I've got two large 7200 rpm drives in
the bottom of the case and in the Zip bay I've got a 10 gig 5400 rpm
ide drive I had lying around that I'm using for auxiliary storage.
Gotta love that case. I also have a fast/wide SCSI card in it (which
runs my CD burner) but I want to hook some large 15000 rpm drives into
it for doing music and video editing.

To summarize:

4 IDE devices max. If you have an optical drive and 2 HDs then you can add one more device (whether your cable supports it is another issue, but dual-drive IDE cables are cheap & plentiful). If you have a Zip, you're maxed out and a PCI IDE card is your best option. Orrrrrrr, you can get an external Firewire case and pop an IDE drive in that.
