I just bought my iPod today, and plugged it into one of my mac's firewire ports to charge it, after a while the metal back of the iPod started to get rather warm (is this normal) a little later the iPod basicly burnt my hand If I tried to pick it up and the LCD display was beggining to "tar" because of the heat (I guess this is'nt normal!)
Is this a known issue, could it have been my fault (all I did was plug the iPod into a G4 tower, when it was at the desktop, i.e running, and leave it to charge for about an hour, before it seemed to get criticaly hot).

Mine gets warm to the touch, but nothing like that- I keep mine on top of my G4 tower when charging as well- I think you have a warranty repair in your future.

I've never heard of the problem either.

Hey roders this is VERY VERY VERY NORMAL.When you connect your iPod to your Mac except the heat that is coming from charging there is the heat from hard disk continually spinning. When you charge it from an outlet the hard disk is not spinning so the heat is not so much. What do you
expect??? It has no holes for the heat to escape and the only cooling method is the metal on the back.So don't worry everything is fine.Because of the screen taring you describe I charge my iPod only from the outlet and connect it to my mac whenever I want to put some songs on my pod.

I wouldn't charge my iPod connected to a FireWire port on a live Mac.

I have left my iPod connected to my iMac via the firewire cable for hours. It gets barely warm, and then goes down to room temperature when it is fuly charged.

You have a defective iPod if it get to hot to touch !!!

I just reread the first post.Yes if it gets so hot that you can't even touch than it sure is defective. But if this isn't the occasion than don't panic about your iPod getting hot.

hey..
if you use the "eject ipod" (I use swedish itunes so I´m not sure that its called that) in iTunes, shouldn´t that prevent the hd from spinning so you just get the heat from recharging?

cheerio!

As previously posted, if the 'Pod is too hot to comfortably touch, something is very wrong. Get it replaced now.
To put it in context, my 'Pod never gets as hot as my Wallstreet's bottom would get.
