Doesn't it seem logical for the flat panel prices to go down for the 15" now that the iMac is out? I mean, the base iMac is $1299 but the flat panel is still $599 for the 15" ... I'm happy with my G4 and would just like to upgrade my monitor to a flat panel, but I want to keep that Apple look and feel ... Anyone think the price will drop to $499 in the near future? Feb maybe?

Yes, but there is nothing compelling for me to trade-in my 533mhz G4. It's a great system with 640MB ram and a 40GB harddrive. I just like flat panels, but when I bought it, the 15" was like $999 or something ridiculous. $499 would make me go for it. If I didn't like Apple so much, I'd buy a cheaper brand, but I just want the complete look and feel. The new iMac is very tempting though ... man ...

Well, Apple has been gradually reducing the prices of their LCD screens, so technically they've already had their discounting. Although it seems like a better deal with the new iMac here, it's still logical to say that Apple's regular LCDs are quite different, as the iMac LCD has to be attached to that large paperweight-like computer the whole time.

The pricing for Apple's LCDs fell in keeping with the falling prices of LCD components. I think component prices have leveled off now, so there might not be any more drops, at least not significant ones, for the time being. I was hoping the 17 would drop to $799 or so, but I don't think it's gonna happen.

Apple has a big whopping rebate on its LCD displays. When that is over, you'll get you're lower-regular-price LCDs. You are probably right though - with unadorned 15-inchers without circuitry gong for $170, Apple should be able to release a $350 15 inch display with a comforablte margin.

<Going off topic a bit>What kind of longevity do lcd monitors have vs. CRTs?</going off topic a bit> That said, the new iMac rocks, if I didn't need scsi support for my Nikon film scanner, my G4 would be on ebay right now. I've been coveting an Apple flat panel display for some time now, perhaps $499.00USD is the magic number.
