I bought an Otherworld Computing 80gig Mercury Elite Firewire HD and it seems to whir away even when I haven't used it for a while. Don't these things support lower-power mode to reduce wear-and-tear and power consumption?

Curious if anyone has info.

Actually, I'm glad it doesn't spin down...I have an OWC 60G that replaced my dead Maxtor. The Maxtor would spin down after about 30 seconds, which was really annoying. I'd rather keep the drive spinning as long as my computer is turned on. Depending on which camp you belong in, the drive may actually experience less wear and tear, compared to spinning down and starting up again every few minutes.
I do not like those green links and spam.
I do not like them, Sam I am.
