I need to vent. Mods may lock the post, but I just need to get this out.

If you are in the market for an MP3 player, buy an iPod (duh, right?)!!! Do NOT, under any circumstances, buy something from sonicblue/Rio!!!!

I was an early adopter and bought a Rio600 in 2000, when they first came out. 32MB built in, I added 32MB more with a proprietary "backpack". The backpack works well, and the music sounds pretty good.

The problem is, I would like to have a player which will stop mid-song, rather than go back to the beginning of a song when it goes to "sleep". This is especially true for 20 minute long movements from classical symphonies, etc.

To get this feature, I would need to upgrade to firmware version 1.55. The trade off is that a new "feature" in this firmware upgrade is that the backpack is now seen as "external memory". So, instead of having on 64MB memory I have two 32MB blocks. What a pain in the a$$! Fortunately I still had the old firmware and could downgrade.

This "new" firmware was introduced on 3/16/01. More than a year ago! Not only do these vibrating butt plugs make crappy software, they don't ever update it/fix problems. The Rio600 is still considered a shipping product!!!

Buy an f'ing iPod!!!!
Don

Now, take a deep, deep breath and relax. Get a hold yourself ... that's better. Click on that browser of yours and go directly to the Apple store and purchase that iPod or do as I have done to keep peace in the family and purchase 3. Trust me, you won't regret it and your money could not be more well spent.

Funny, my Riovolt MP3CD player also had the same problem when I first bought it (no memory spot in playback).

But my last firmware update fix that, but since the player uses CD-R, I don't have that other problem.

At least you can transfer MP3's. My iMac doesn't even recognize my Rio 600, unless I have the patience to juggle the connector in and out of the Rio.

My iPod arrived today.

I believe I have just found my long lost family!

If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

consider yourself lucky that your rio still works! i purchased my rio 600 at the grand opening of an apple store, and it worked fine for 2 months then it started to eat batteries every 1/2 hour! then it started to just shut off any time you touched one of the buttons! i contacted rio's customer service 6 TIMES!!!! to no avail, when they did finally get back to me (after 3 weeks of waiting from my last e-mail) they advised me to send the unit back to them (which would cost me $25.00) and they would take about 5 weeks to check or replace the unit..... excuse me !? rio wanted me to pay an additional 25.00$ to have them keep my 150.00$ mp3 player for 5 weeks? i told them to send me a pre-paid shipping label and i would be glad to do so, and to this day i've yet to get any response. i keep it on my desk in my office and i tell everyone this story, and i know i have cost rio at least a few thousand in revenue from people that were thinking of buying a rio product. they have the worst customer service in the world. i would not take a rio product if they gave the damn thing to me. F*#%K RIO!!!!!!!
