After the last firmware updated I wonder how many people will go near this one. I've heard nothing but bad things regardling the last update.
Let's show 'em why Macworld 2003 won't be like Macworld 2002.

I'm at work and left my iPod's firewire cable at home (d*mn!), so I can't install 1.0.4 yet; however, on the Apple support site, some users are complaining that the whine is back. However, menu speed, etc., are much improved.

Anybody have any more info?

Thanks,
Mark

I managed to get a copy of the 1.03 updater and ran it with no trouble. I like the fact that the whine is gone, I think I'll wait with 1.04.

I'll wait till they figure out how to get partial caching working before I'll bother updating mine.

Yes, 1.04 marks the return of the 'whine'; in fact, the it seems to have restored the mp3 decoder firmware to its pre-1.03 state; i.e., return of the whine, return of ability to play lowbitrate mono 'audiobook' files, still with clipping of ends of some VBR files.

The 255 character max menus are now more responsive than when they first appeared in 1.03, and some are saying they perceive music playing faster after selection and shorter pauses between tracks.

It seems that fixing the mp3 decoder firmware is beyond Apple's ability at this time. Pity.

I never tried 1.0.3 but this seems fine. I don't get whine anymore and it does seem crisper and SNAPPIER. No, not really! As long as it works, I'm fine.

Well, this poses a dilemma. I have 1.0.3 on my 'pod. The whine didn't bother me (I listen to classical music, but mainly rock and jazz, so I didn't hear it much). To upgrade or not...hmmmmmm. As a programmer, it doesn't seem to me that there should be such an inseparable connection between slow scrolling, etc. and fixing the whine.

The ARM processor (I think that's what's in the iPod) is a powerful chip...I was going to import an Acorn computer from the UK just to have the opportunity to program one; beautiful architecture and performance.

Hmm...
I don't get a whine on my iPod. If anything I thought 1.0.4 sounds better than 1.0.2.[/LIST]

I have 1.0.2. I heard 1.0.3 was a disaster (aside from getting rid of the whine which I've never heard). Is there any reason for me to fool around and update to 1.0.4??? Better sound? Easier scrolling? Quicker? I don't need any additional languages. English is fine. I'd appreciate any input.

1.0.4 installed fine for me. However, I feel the sound quality, at least in the bass region, has taken a dive. I've never been bothered by the whine. I'm usually jamming at quite a high volume, so I don't even really notice it. I think I'm going back to 1.0.2.

hrmmm this better not be the only way to change the bass levels and such..by switching firmwares hehe. Apple needs to pick up on their 400 dollar device's firmware.
