Hi all,
Im a newbie to Macs, just bought a Macbook, and Im filling it up rapidly with tunes and video etc.
I have a 250Gb SATA HDD lying around, So I would like to use this as an external HDD.
Should I look for USB or Firewire enclosure? Ill mostly be capturing video from a firewire port onto it. Can you daisy chain a camera and hdd, or would it be better to hang the hdd on the USB?

Im considering something like HDD
or
USB HDD

Thanks

Dave

Firewire every time in my book. Slightly faster than USB 2 and yes you can daisy chain.

I still prefer FireWire myself too. You can also boot from an external FireWire drive if you wish, where as I still dont think you can do this from a USB drive.
Apart from this however, USB drives are not bad.. I have a couple and they work fine.

Thanks,
Ive ordered one of these: clicky as it had both ports on it. I wonder if capturing and writing on the firewire port would be slower than captureing on firewire writing to USB, as the devices have to share bandwidth. Ill do some tests when it arrives.

Presumably Id need to install OsX on the disk to boot from it? can I just do this with the disks that came with my macbook, as a reasonable backup precaution( a minimal get the system running sort of install). Is it worth it?

You are unlikely to notice any real world differences between using the drive with FireWire or USB2.. But the general consensus seems to be that FireWire does still have the edge in most cases.

And yes, you'd need to install OS X on the external drive to boot from it. It can be very handy to do this, as it can get you out of a tricky situation. Like if you have a problem with your main OS X install.
