I need some advise concerning the old style flat panel graphite monitor. I have a G4 PCI graphics 400 Mhz and I have the opportunity of buying one of those 15' flat panel monitors (old style graphite) would it work on my G4 PCI Graphics?

Thanks for your help in advance

Good question. I love my _old_ 15" LCD, but I have it connected to an AGP G4. It seems that the monitor you're talking about was out at the same time as the PCI G4's, so it should work fine as long as the graphics card hasn't been replaced. But don't go by that - check it out (here's how...)

Look around the back side of your G4 (don't blush ). Find the place where your monitor connects now - it's the top PCI slot, most likely. Your CRT connects to the card via a VGA connector - the pins are kinda staggered like this \\\\` . If there is an unused connection with pins arranged more like this :::-::- (straight up and down with some centered, I don't remember the order), then you have a DVI connector, and can use the older LCD displays! If that's unclear, let me know.

As is, the non-AGP Power Mac G4 will not work with the graphite 15" Studio display. (No DVI port on the included video card.)

However, if you replace the included Rage 128 card with a Mac Voodoo 4 or Voodoo 5 card, you can connect the graphite 15" Studio display to your computer.

Also, if you can find one of the older (blueberry or dark blue) 15" Studio Displays, you can connect it to your computer without replacing the video card. However, you will need an iMate USB to ADB adaptor if you want to use the color calibration software.

It seems that I have the PCI Rage Pro 128 without the digital connector. I heard that the 15" graphite flat screen comes with a Rage Pro 128 with digital connector included. Is that information correct?

Any advice would be great.

Thanks

If you are saying the monitor ships with a graphics card included, that is incorrect. However, you can buy the cards with DVI at various online stores for $99, but maybe they're AGP only. Check around, if I see one, I'll let you know.

Not all Apple flat-screens were DVI! Only the Cinema Display was DVI until a few months ago. There were many VGA graphite LCD monitors out before then.

Hm, didn't know that. Are you buying a new one, michelin, or picking up a used one? Find out what kind of connector if it's used. Be it VGA, you're set.

Im trying to buy a new one since they have a $300 rebate but salesman does not know the answer about the compability issue. So far I been told that it uses a Digital signal found only in the AGP G4s not on the PCI G4s like mine. The Apple store sells a video card with digital signal but is only APG.

Is there any adaptor from VGA to DVI that I can use?

Help me out guys in this issue because I dont want to spend a $1000 on a flat panel that I cant use.

Thanks in advance

Well, that does it, I guess. There may be a converter, but I have certainly never heard of one. How did Apple make some VGA and some DVI? Apparently they converted the signal somehow, but I don't think you can buy anything to do that for you. I hope for your sake I am proven wrong, but it seems pretty sure that you can't use it.

[edit] Just wanted to point out that the topic is actually about 15 foot LCD displays (15'). Has anyone seen one of those recently? No offense, just kinda funny that I noticed now.

I thought the first Apple 15 LCD (trans. dark blue) was VGA, but when the Bondi and Graphite 15 LCD came out, they became digital displays and since this was before ADC, they must have the DVI connector, since a VGA connector is analog. I think there is a converter box (nor adapter) that will intercede between a VGA and DVI, but its not that cheap. You are probably better off getting a faster video card that supports DVI.
