I have the usb wacom intuos tablet on 8.6 and everything installed fine but on start up the tablet isn't recognized, and the drivers are not installed. The tablet seems to work, but only as a mouse and not so much as a pen, and the control panel will not open, instead it tells me the extension was not installed (which it is, I checked.)
I upgraded the wacom drivers to no avail.
Does anyone have a solution to this dilema?

You said you downloaded the latest wacom drivers from their website (4.5.2)? Also, do you have a usb pci card? If so, you have to make sure you download the latest usb card adapter support from the apple site. If all else fails, check the extensions manager to see if you have all your usb extensions turned on. Good luck.

I am using an iMac, so the usb is onboard. The only usb update from Apple is for the pci usb card, unfortuneately. I'm positive I have the most recent firmware update for this version of the OS, 8.6 should have taken care of that. All the extensions needed are on, of course I could take a look again. The real kicker is that it installed perfectly on the pc I use at work (sigh) but my mac at home is choking on it!
(yes, the disc had both installers... )

Any other possibilities?

The tablet must be connected and the indicator light must be on *before* you install the software. Try this.

I have seen lots of problems where Wacom tablets are involved (esp. peripheral device troubles), so i suggest talking to Wacom about updaters/firmware or whatever... try with OS 9.04 is possible.

It's documented as working with OS 8.5, with the appropriate firmware updates. I'm running 8.6, so my firmware should be up to date enough to run this tablet.
Perhaps I should get OS 9.
