Was thinking of picking up an old 4/600 Laserwriter for next to nothing...but wondering if anyone has had much success in getting it to work on newer USB based Macs and OS X.

I have one on one of my networks...but USB doesn't have anything to do with it. It is an LocalTalk only device. So you will need to find an ethernet to localtalk converter, which will probably cost as much as the printer...!

I think you might be better off with a faster and more modern laser printer. Check the deals on dealmac.com. You'll be much happier.

Unless the 4/600 is free and you've already got the localtalk to ethernet converter already on hand?

I'm using one very succesfully via a Dayna Mini Etherprint. I've used this adapter for quite sometime with an NTR, 320 and now the 4/600, totally reliable. It's connected to my ethernet network and shared between a PowerMac, MacBook and iMac G5, all using (currently) 10.4.8.

Admittedly the printer is slow by modern standards, but for my occasional printing needs (I avoid printing things as far as possible due to the storage space required and to save trees!) it's ideal.

It seems you can even pick up brand new HP branded toner cartridges quite cheaply on ebay for these too (do a google search to see the compatible HP model).
