The sooner, the better. I am afraid of dropping it every time I take it out of my pocket to adjust the volume, etc. Otherwise, it is everything I had ever hoped for in a portable music device.

Would this be an Apple remote or third party? I'd rather have an Apple.

You guys don't understand how badly I need one. Especially one I can do from across my dorm room. I have it hooked up to nice JBL speakers.

Well, keep in mind that if and when this remote arrives, it'll be a gadget at the end of a cable connected to the ipod, not an infrared remote control. If it's typical of other remotes, that cable probably won't be more than three or four feet long.

i dont believe that the current design of the ipod allows for a remote such as that, unfortunately. from experience w/ many other music players (cd, md, etc) i find that all the remote controls require a slot in the plug for transmitting the information. its hard to explain unless uv seen one. but i dont believe that the data can be transmitted through the cord plug itself. correct me if im wrong, but ive never seen a remote device work w/ the current setup on the ipods plug...
i hope im wrong, cause i could use one too--changing songs during class needs to be a lil less obvious than is now required...

Well as far as the plug architecture goes... I had a Nomad II and it had a remote that used the standard headphone jack. You could use it as a headphone extender or not. Actually over fifteen years ago I had a Aiwa Walkman that did the same. So, I have to believe that the iPod has the capability. I certainly hope so.

By the way... does anybody think it's weird that we're so used to Apple's secrecy that have to sit around and speculate what the future of this product that we spent $400 on. Would it kill them to tell us what they've got in development? Does everything have to be a friggin' suprise all the time???? [/LIST]

Acctually Panasonic had at least one 'walkman' model (15 years ago) with with a remotecontrol which communicated by a 5Hz signal via the headphoncord - no extra connectors!

There is two strong indications of a possible remote to the ipod.
First the service menu contains a Remote testing sequence, second there is a outer space or distance around headphone connector on the ipod, like something is supposed to fit around it and if it does it will make contact to the thingies on the outside of the connecter! =)

i'm sorry if the it's hard to understand but my english is not the best

i really hope there will be a remote - a cool one!
