Just purchased a new QPS Firewire 24x10x40 CD-RW drive due to some severe rebates being offered. Anyway, I am running into some problems I hope you all can assist me with. I have an IMac DV SE with 400Mhz, 384MB of RAM running (just upgraded to) version 10.1.2 of the OS with iTunes 2.0.3.

1. iTunes does not see the drive at all. I have tried the hack of the TeacCDR.device-plugin file that I saw on another thread. No success. Does anyone have anything else to try to get this working with iTunes short of waitng for the next release.
The System Profiler has the following:

QBP-2 Bridge (RW-241040 U100)
Apple disc burning:Supported
Vendor ID: 1f3
Speed: 400 Mb/sec
GUID: 127746d
Vendor Name: QPS
Unit Version: 66691 (U100)

2. The first time I burned a CD-RW disc as an experiment in this drive, from the OS, it performed the burn portion just fine. But when I tried to erase the drive (using Disk Utility) and record a second time I only get the message that the volume "Can not be modified".

I would like to hear some opinions about this drive, or what I am doing wrong, before I create any more possible drink coasters. - Thanks in advance for any help given.

Maybe you might look at xlr8yourmac.com and have a look through their Drive Compatibilty Database. You might find some answers there.

This happened to me as well. I got 2 of these drives from outpost (yeah, only one per customer, but 'my mom' ordered the other one). Anyway, iTunes sees one, but the other one (exact same speed and enclosure, 24x10x40 Firewire) iTunes does not see. It is iTunes, as it does not see the other burner. However, disc burner works fine with it, and so does Disc Copy. Toast Lite 5.x.x works great when booted in OS 9.2.x. Toast Lite was included on the QPS disc that came with your burner. Something neat: in OS 9, you can drag an iTunes playlist to Toast's window, and it will load that playlist's songs. As I don't have Toast for OS X, I can't verify this for OS X.

OK. I went out to the xlr8yourmac.com site and attempted to perform the hack for a Plextor type drive as well after reading a post there concerning someone with similar Apple Profile information (I had already tried the Teac type).

Still no success with getting iTunes to recognize the drive though.

I make a copy of and edit the copy of the specified the file in the /System/Library.../DevicePlugins directory and changed the specified text using HexEdit. Then I move the current file that is in the /../DevicePlugins directory to another directory and put the edited copy of the file in the DevicePlugins directory changing the name of the copy to the original's name. After that I use the sudo chmod, chgrp & chown commands to set up the proper permissions and ownerships. Still no success. Am I missing something here? Is there another drive type I should try based on the output from my Apple Profile listed in this post?

I was able to get the Toast Lite software to work for this drive pretty successfully (but only after booting up with OS 9.2 - Toast can not see the drive while in Classic). But I would like to have full capabilities to use this drive with OS-X. It is a small pain to have to boot to OS 9 to get full use of the drive.

Also I was still unable to erase a CD-RW disc using the Disk Utility in OS-X. After trying to erase the disc several times using the Utiltiy, OS-X still responded that the "Volume can not be modified".

I like the drive, it has the nice graphite color to match my iMac (petty I know) but I want to keep it if I can get these problems worked out.

If anyone has any more ideas about these two problems I would love to hear them. Thanks.

Toast for OS X should recognize and use the drive just as well as the version of Toast for OS 9.x. However, the OS X Toast will cost you $80. I've heard that it is available for a lesser upgrade price. You could check Roxio's price.

Sorry if I've missed something, but have you tried iTunes Helper? http://www.ituneshelper.com I think is the URL - it did the trick for me when my LaCie FireWire CD-RW drive worked fine burning from the Finder but wouldn't show up in iTunes at all!
