Can I use a USB monitor with the new G4 towers or Cube?
I seem to remember some of Apple's fairly recent monitors being connectable to Mac's via USB, is this true.
I'm actually thinking of getting a Sony 17" A200 Trintiron display, does anyone know own this monitor or know if it's any good & the Max screen resolution (Sony's site info's a bit sparse, it just gives the Refresh rate).
What is the difference between a Trinitron & Diamondtron monitor, i.e. which is better

I think you mean a VGA monitor with a built-in USB hub? Those should work fine. If that's not what you mean, you'll have to explain more.

This monitor has no VGA port, it connects to the host computer only via USB (USB is used not for addtional ports on the monitor but for the display signal) as I believe some of the B&W studio displays did, there's a USB monitors extension in OS 9 to support these I believe.

Can someone give me an answer on this one, I've answered many peoples posts in the MacNN forum in the past, it would be kinda nice if someone could repay the favour.

P.S sorry for whining but this is important to me.

patience is a virtue i often have too little of, and i suggest that if someone had an answer for you, you'd get that answer posted here... these machines are rather new and there is much confusion and misinformation floating around about them... hang in there

You are mistaken. USB does not have the bandwidth suitable for connecting a monitor. I think you might be confusing the old 21" Studio Display which required a USB connection (I believe) for accessing the monitor controls. The video signal on that monitor (and other 'USB monitors') still goes via a VGA cable.
I don't know anything about the particular Sony monitor you mention but it will certainly be connectable to the new G4 towers and Cube via the VGA port (this and other non-Apple monitors will not be able to connect via the new ADC connection).
The difference between Trinitron and Diamondtron is about which company owns the patent. Both are aperture-grill technologies and both are pretty much the same. Trinitron is a Sony technology, Diamondtron belongs to Mitsubishi.

Your right about the Studio displays and USB, but I'm still confused about this monitor. It definitely only uses USB to connect to the Host computer (checked the site again) & I don't see why USB would not have enough bandwidth for just the video signal.
Also the place that's selling these monitors at a discount is a really well known UK MAC dealer (one of the biggest in the country) who is giving me a special price because I subscribe to MacUser. I've asked them if it will work with a G4 and they said it should but I need to know that it WILL, before I buy it.
They could not give me a definite just a "I would think so" also know one (not even Sony) seem's to know the Max resolution of this monitor, ARGHH!
