According to this press release (by Toshiba, in Japanese), they will be coming out with 10GB & 20GB 1.8" drive in March & February respectively.

Think the 20GB is too fat for iPod, but 10GB seem ok for the size.

Currently iPod uses Toshiba's

Same link in English -
Current 5 GB drive is 5mm thick, I believe.
Press release says the 10GB is also 5mm and the 20 GB is 8mm.

Looks like either one may fit, as the rubber shock mounts inside are two layer, apparently to accomodate a thicker drive...

Cost has got to drop apple must be making little profit (if any) on the ipod due to the HD price $399 per disc. So I cannot see the upgrade till the HD price drops abit...

I'm thinking about getting an iPod, but I don't know if I should wait for a 10GB drive. Can you swap out the 5GB drive easily?

Yes, sites that have taken apart the iPod say it would be fairly easy to change it.

my gues would be that apple might come out with a 10gb one for ATLEAST $400-$450 and discount the 5gb hopefully to the $300-$325 range.

I talked to an official apple vendor about the ipod today. I aksed him if he has one and he said he was waiting for a bigger disk, he also said he wouldn't have to wait long.
I don't know what to think about this...does he really know details or is he just guessing like we do?
I'd really like to order my ipod today but you know...

hmm.

here's my advice.
get ipod.
love ipod.
never leave ipod.

and don't sweat the small stuff. cause if you wait and get a 10 gig one, there will be a "truly useful" 20 gig one next month... that's the way it goes. buy this one, love it, and when they jump to 20, swap.

Sure, you're right, but if I got one today and the following week when the 10gig came out, they'd drop the price of the 5 gig, I would get really really mad! I know it's always like that but you can minimize the "risk" if you buy right after the announcement of a new product and not right before.

ah.
it's so true.
this is definitely the worst part about buying techtoys.
they always drop the price.
it's an entertainment/enjoyment vs. money/time issue.

i just like to do what i want now, rather than hope/wait any longer.
money? it's going to go somewhere anyway.
at the end of the day do i count what i've got left or do i smile and sleep...?
(this by no means is meant to create a vision of a wealthy poocat.)

enjoy it. but god, i hear the worries.

it sounds easy but i gotta tell you
i got 7.70 GB of mp3's

it's a real pain in the ass to every time update my collection and having too cut of 40 % of my mp3's for on my ipod... i even am thinking of selling my pod with the warranty still alive, and then waiting until a bigger ipod comes and buying it again

it's like a stock market

Poocat: Ah, now i know why you tell me this! Next week, when the bigger ipods come out, you don't want to be the only one lamenting
No seriously it's the hope for a remote and possibly more resistant wheel that makes me wait some more days. Oh sh** on that, I'll go straight to the apple store!!

yes!
give in because you know i'm listening to firewire-fast, apple-beautiful ipod right now!

heh.
like most of us, i'm sure, i've got more than 5 gigs of mp3s, but it's not that bad.
firewire makes it fast enough that i _can_ just swap massive amounts of stuff in and out.
plus... i don't know about you... there are different things i listen to at home and when out, so
much of my mp3 collection (ie my jazz, which is chill@home music) can stay off of my ipod.

don't think i don't want a remote though.
god, i want a remote (been a md user for years and i miss it real bad)
i'm just hoping that when they start selling a remote it'll be an add-on and i can buy one too.

either that or i'll have to upgrade.
but i won't be sad.

...or if you got the CompUSA warranty, it could accidently break and you have to exchange it. Oh gee, it broke. I'll have a new one with the remote, Thank you!

I've been holding out for the price drop which has to come soon. 5G is big enough for me at the moment. May be Apple will wait for FW2 before the HD update.

It is amazing that the Toshiba 5GB drive by itself costs around $400... and yet Apple has somehow struck a deal with them and are able to offer the iPod at basically the price of the harddrive... Volume pricing sure does rock

I agree though that a 20 gig iPod will great for toting around my music !!

Firdst, we have to figure out how to succesfully re-format the ipods hard drive. If anyone has been paying attention if you re-format the drive the ipod will no longer work.
