I've got a DVSE 400, 256mb ram system 9.0.4 and a new Canon 3000 printer that is allegedly Mac compatable for >8.1. I went through the install with the included software from the Canon install CD, and even tried a download from canon's site with no joy. The software installs and I can select the BJC3000 in the chooser, but nothing shows up in the connected to box. I know it's got to be some kind of extension conflict but trying with base 9.0.4 software gives the same results and the canon reps have been clueless. Any ideas or help is appreciated.
Thanks
Jake

Let's start with the stupid stuff (Not a knock on you, we've all done the stupid stuff. I've been a Mac network administrator for six years and I still have to force myself to check the stupid stuff).

First, you can see the Canon driver in the chooser. That's good. That means the software most likely installed correctly.

I don't think you have an extensions conflict. If you did, it would work with the base extensions. There are no known major bugs with the Canon drivers, and this would be a major conflict.

The first thing to check is is the printer on. Is it plugged in? Have you put the ink cartridges in correctly? If they are in wrong or not in the printer at all, it may not show up in the choser.

Is the printer correctly plugged into the computer? I'm assuming that you are connecting via USB and not some sort of adapter. If you are running the printer through a USB hub, try it without the hub. Plug the printer into the second USB port on the computer instead and skip the hub, just to see if you can print then. If you can, then talk to the hub manufacturer to see if you can get a replacement. If it's a MacAlly hub, throw it as far as you can and go get another. I recommend Asante, but there are other good hubs out there.

This is all rudimentary stuff, but I never know the level of the person asking the question, so please don't be offended if you are Steve Jobs brother in law or something or invented the Internet like Algore did.

If this doesn't help, post back. Maybe there is something else we can try or maybe someone else has had this problem and can shed more light on it.

Don

Mr, Foy
Thanks for the quick response, and I have to say your remarks are just good diagnostics, and I shoulda told ya what I've done when posting... Which was not smart, if more than stupid (less than stupid?)... anyway, originally it was connected to USB 1, which is the lower of the two as I recall, thru a Entegra hub4U, and yas, I did try connecting directly to the Imac usb ports, both 0 and 1, with no success.
Here's what a Canon rep emailed me that I also tried...Where it says Present, not installed were extensions that the Canon rep did'nt mention as being necessary that I wanted them to know were there. Canon instuctions follow>> my responses follow>
>>Check the following extensions and make sure they are all on.

>I get an error message stating "A file require for printing was not installed. Reinstall the print driver." I tried reinstalling the syatem software and then installing the Canon driver... still nothing.
>>Sincerely
I got one reply on another board from a user stating
>>The BJC-85 (portable) is hooked up to my Lombard 400 and I didn't have any problems with OS9. The printer worked perfectly right out of the box. However under OS 9.04 (installed on another drive) It exhibited "exactly" the same problems you are experiencing-Yes.....It is an extension conflict! I never did figure out which particular extension(s) was/were responsible!!<<
I've considered going back to OS9, but I wanted to see if anyone else had a fix before I took that step.
Other things I tried include connecting it to an in-laws wintel machine, just to be sure it was'nt a bizzare mechanical problem (some kinda gatewood machine) It worked there.... So I'm stumpted... O I did make sure that the power was on whilst trying all this stuff... even when printing to the windows machine. The Gateway seemed most useful with the power off; didja know they make wonderful doorstops? And I did not invent the internet, altho I did have an arpanet account in '76...

OK.

Let's try something else. Are you printing only to this Canon printer?

If so, let's go into the extensions manager and turn off all Apple printer files, including all desktop printing extensions.

Also go into your extension folder and remove all printer descriptions except any Canon has put in there.

Go to preferences folder and trash printing prefs.

If that doesn't help, I would bug the crap out of Canon and Apple until they provide a solution.

Yep.

Done

Done. The results are still can't find the connected to box AND it generates an error message saying File required for printing is not installed. Reinstall the print driver.

Working on it.
Know any one that wants a Canon 3K for cheap?------------------
