I have a Que QPS Firewire 8x4x32 CD-RW burner on a B&W G3 350mhz, OS 9.0.4 with all OS software updated to latest versions. Toast standard version which I upgraded to 4.1 that came with the burner. I've been burning cd's with Toast fine for the last few months.
I just received my MacWorld special priced version of Retrospect Express v4.3. On installation of Retrospect it installed the following extensions, Retro.Startup & Retrospect SDAP Support. But Toast stopped working. Toast extension Toast FireWire Support needs to be enabled all the time for Toast to see the burner.
I went through all of the extension conflicts and found out that if the extension named Que! Fire is enabled, Retrospect Express will see the Que and I can backup, but Toast now doesn't see the burner. So I have to disable the Que! Fire extension and restart to use Toast, but now Retrospect Express doesn't see the burner. The Retrospect extension named Retrospect SDAP Support according to Conflict Catcher is the extension Retrospect uses to see burners. But if I disable Retrospect SDAP Support and leave the Que! Fire extension and Toast FireWire Support enabled, Retrospect stills works (not Toast though).
Toast won't work with the Que! Fire extension enabled. I've emailed all parties involved and Dantz responded they know of no conflicts. Adaptec responded that my Que burner is not supported by them even though their website says it is and the Que box has the Adaptec logo with approved product below it. I pointed this out to them and they respond that they don't support the drive. I've traded 3-4 emails with Adaptec support and they've been both rude and very unhelpful. Insisting they don't support the drive and it's not their problem. And they won't let me upgrade to Toast Deluxe because they don't support the Que. So far today, 8/20 QPS hasn't responded to my email.
I was wondering if anyone knows a work around to this problem? If I’m burning cd’s and don’t restart my computer so Retrospect can work, my automatic back-ups fail overnight. Very annoying.

I have two thoughts:

First, try downgrading to Toast 4.0.2. With 4.1 the OS recognizes the drive as a Firewire device, previous versions saw it as a SCSI device, via the QueFire extension. I think that Retrospect is using the QueFire extension to see the drive as a SCSI device, whereas Toast doesn't use it anymore. Ideally, the QueFire extension should be removed with the latest version of Toast.

Next, you can use DiskCopy to create a 650MB disk image, and backup to that. Then, burn the image to CD with Toast. Using this method, you keep up-to-date software.

Good luck.

Try going back to the earlier version of Toast (4.0.1.1) which originally came with your drive and which does not have native
Firwire Support (make sure to do a clean install; ie delete out all the Toast 4.1 extensions and applications before reinstalling 4.0.1.1). This version requires the Que! extension, and does not need any of the Toast Firewire extensions which you mentioned (it uses some USB extensions instead). After you do this, if you have problems recognizing the drive from Toast, you may want to use the old Apple Firewire extensions (2.3.3 not the newer 2.4). This procedure might solve your extensions conflict (dont know enough about Retrospect) especially with regard to Toast.
Dont waste your time emailing/calling QPS; you will probably never get a reply or be able to reach them. Their tech support is virtually non-existent (IF you can get thru), and their phone lines are constantly busy (believe me I have tried calling and dealing with them). If nothing else, then just be happy that your drive actually works and you can use it to do something useful (some of us dont even have that blessing).

Hi,

You need to be sure to enable the Toast CD Reader as well. The way Retrospect sees the drive is through the Toast CD Reader, which talks to the Toast FireWire support extension.

So the list of extensions is:

Toast CD Reader
Toast FireWire Support
Retrospect SDAP Support

NO Que! Fire -- remove this extension.

I've got this burner working fine with these extensions with both Toast and Retrospect.

Hey, there:

I have no insight on the conflict that started this thread, but I would like to know what all of this "special price" business is about. Dantz lists RE at $49.95, is there a way I can get it cheaper?

Please enlighten me.

Well thank you very much. Downgrading to Toast 4.0.1.1 worked. Restrospect and Toast now play nice together.
I don't have the Toast CD Reader enabled either. Conflict Catcher says with Apple CD-Rom version 5.3.1, I don't need the reader. Retrospect and Toast now work fine.
Thanks for all the help GORDYmac, Abd AlMoutee and Adam1234.
Storyboy, at Macworld, Dantz was giving a special at $29.95 on Restrospect Express 4.3. This has the ability to back up to CD-R, CD-RW. It works great too.

Hi mozart11,

I'm glad it's working for you now; however, I meant that I am happily enjoying the combination of Toast 4.1 and Retrospect 4.3:

Toast CD Reader 4.1
Toast FireWire Support 1.0
Retrospect SDAP Support 1.0

No Apple CD-ROM driver, no Que Fire! extension.

Cheers,

Adam

I would assume with the apple cd-rom disabled, the internal Apple cd-rom will not work. Am I incorrect?

I have a similar problem with this Que and Toast
it worked fine for weeks
I even used a Canon DV camera via Firewire and I connected a FW HD with Formedia (later upgraded to Radialogic). All of a sudden de iMac started crashing and Toast lost the writer.

Que!Fire didn't help. upgrading Toast didn't help, disabling Radialogic didn't help even using other Firewire HD drivers didn't help. De Que! is gone.

it already cost me most of two days to fix this. normally I find a solution in minutes.
any suggestions?

A bit off topic - but I was wondering if anyone knew a method of getting Retrospect 4.3 to work with a Plextor 12x/10x/32x CD-RW?

Just go to the Dantz website and download the new drivers. The Plextor 12X10X32 is supported with this upgrade (a very small driver file that you drop into your Retrospect folder). Get this- I have the same CD-RW but it has the Teac mechanism in it instead of the Plextor. I can't get it to work with Retrospect- keeps crashing. Dantz e-mailed me this morning to inform me that they don't support the 12X10X32 with the Teac mechanism!!! They don't know if they will. Arggggg. I e-mailed Que to see if they will swap me devices. Waiting to hear back- don't expect much if any help or satisfaction.

I have been having a terrible time with my new Que! FW 8x4x32 drive as well. I have a Macally 3 port adapter on beige G3 266, running 9.2.1. The Firewire enable is version 2.8, I think. I can read CDs from the Que! but if I use Disk Burner the system freezes, and Toast 4.1.2 says I have no CD Recorder, check cables and power. I have tried disabling Disk Burner, Apple CD ROM extension, all the Toast extensions- nothing works!

9.1.2 doesn't seem all that stable either. Only 9.1.2 base works. Even 9.1.2 All has a "Finder unexpectedly quit"

First time I have ever actually used a slot, and not a nice experience.

I would really appreciate the help! I have gotten nowhere with tech support, including the place I bought the stuff at. Aaack!
