Yes, most if not all of them should work. I think the Sony monitors are good alternatives to the Apple monitors.

I can vouch for both NEC and Viewsonic hooking up to a G4 without additional adapters.

In fact, old Apple monitors need an adapter to work with the G4.

Yes, PC monitors will work with a G4. We have a black 19" IBM monitor hooked to one...

We've had pretty good luck with the KDS monitors floating around on the web. Be aware -- the cheap 19" KDS monitors do *not* have a short neck. That's an issue if you're trying to put a G4 in a tight space. That's how we ended up with an IBM (I Became Macintosh) monitor hooked to a G4 we've got. KDS short-neck monitors were back-ordered for 3 months or so.

If you have the money to burn, or plan on doing scads of print work, your best bet is one of the Hitachis with .22 dot pitch. Much, much easier on the eyeballs.

Speaking for myself, I'd try to avoid the Sony monitors. Sony's QA has really gone downhill in the past decade. The tubes put out a pretty picture, but they're doing something in their soldering process to screw it up. We've seen a number of different and varied Sony products that had cold solder joints which caused the product to flake out. Sure, the fix was fairly easy, but why should you have to fix it in the first place, when you could do it right when manufactured?

Taking account of what was previously said about Sony, I have to say that the Sony monitors certainly "look" very cool...and are often less expensive then the Apple Studio Display. Right now I'm deciding on a 17" Apple Studio Display, and a Sony A200. This Sony model is the one that looks like a short brushed stainless steel box(slick-like the VAIO's), with a large frame for the picture, no stand, a "mouse"-like button in the center of the bottom (for monitor positioning, etc) AND (the big seller) a four port USB hub... it seems like a pretty good buy for about a hundred bucks less than the ASD... the ASD just looks like its supposed to go with the G4 (but its huge)... I'd love to get input on both monitors, a comparisson (preferably if someone actually sees them side by side), and if anybody has one, opinions...etc...

Stay cool,

I have an A200; getting rid of it because the ergonomics are so bad. It has a 'door stop' included with it to angle it correctly - which looks just plain silly - and is an afterthought IMHO. Even on top of a desktop machine, it still needs a phone book underneath it, which defeats the purpose of the pretty box. Tube is decent but don't expect anything much more than 1024x768.
