Scanner: Astra Umax 4000
Computer: G3 Mac B&W, 350MHZ running OS 8.6
Software concerned: Photoshop 5.5; Office 98 and the scanner software: Omnipage LE, VistaScan, etc.
I submitted this query to Umax three days ago and they emailed me detailed instructions for Windows format; I appeal to the universe and Macnn for help!I am a beginner at all this, too.
I scanned a black and white document (a form that I will need to fill in) and need to have it available as a template in Word. It is saved as a psd file and I can't figure out how to save it as a Document. Can anyone help!?

There are two ways that I can think of, either save the image as a PICT or TIF in photoshop{I can't remember which MS likes, check the help file in Word}, and then use the Import>Picture command in word to get the image in the background. If you spend sometime setting the tabs and font sixe correctly, you should be able to fill it in. Make sure that once you have placed the image, go into the Format>Picture menu and set the Layout to 'under the text.'
The other way is to OCR the docment with whatever flavor came with the scanner, usually Omniworks, and then save it as a .doc file.
The advantage to the first is that you hav a reasonable facisimile of the form in your document, provided that you scanned it at a high enough resolution, 120-150 dpi should be both legible and manageable. The second method converts yours document into text, in which case you don't need to worry about resolution, but you'll have to do some reformatting - and if it is an official form, then it probably won't be accepted.
Hope this helps.

What you are trying to do is more trouble than it is worth. I do what you are trying to do, but I use different tools.
First, do you have a graphics or illustration application?
Save the scanned form as a PICT or TIFF file.
Open the saved form in an application that can edit PICT files.
Select your text tool, usually the large A on your tools palette.
Click on the location where you want to enter informaton and type.
As an alternative, you can use a page laylot application, such as Adobe PageMaker.
You may scan the form directly into the application or import the saved image file.
You may then add text boxes where you need to enter on the form.
The bottomline is that there are applications that do what you need and do it very well. However, word processors are not on the list.
